The Reality Facing Nigerian Youth
Mental Health Crisis
- •  Anxiety, depression, and emotional distress are rising rapidly among Nigerian adolescents and young
adults.
- •  Suicide is a leading cause of death among young Nigerians (ages 15–34), with reports indicating that 50%
of cases occur within this demographic. (Socialist workers League)
- •  Economic instability, social pressure, and uncertain futures are placing enormous psychological strain on
students and young adults.
Sexual & Reproductive Health Challenges
- •  Nigeria continues to face a significant HIV burden, with 20,838 new infections recorded in the first quarter
of 2026 alone, with Lagos and Benue among the most affected states. (The Guardian Nigeria)
- •  Adolescent girls and young women remain disproportionately affected by HIV and reproductive health
risks. (GITNUX)
- •  Nigeria also has one of the highest maternal mortality rates globally, with about 576 deaths per 100,000 live
births. (UNICEF)

Why Universities Matter
- •  Nigeria has one of the youngest populations in the world, with a huge proportion under 25.
- •  Universities are where young adults make critical decisions about identity, relationships, sexuality, career,
and mental wellbeing.
- •  If we want to shape Nigeria’s future, we must meet young people where they are, on campus.
